Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as a public speechwriter. Feminist Frequency was established by Sarkeesian. The site hosts videos featuring commentary and analysis of the representations of women that are prevalent in the media and popular culture of today. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American blogger and media critic who has won prizes for her work, is a feminist blogger. Feminist Frequency is an educational non-profit website that examines female representations in narratives from popular culture. Aiming to break down the stereotypes of women that have been portrayed in pop culture she also works to highlight issues related to harassment targeted at women and the other marginalized groups of the Internet world. Sarkeesian holds a York University master's in social theological, philosophical and political thought. Alongside being a popular public speaker she has made speeches at the TEDxWomen The XOXO Conference as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. She was interested in the gender issue and feminist movements from a very young time. In 2009, while still studying at university she started her Feminist Frequency website. The determined lady had planned to launch a web series examining the gender roles in video games. However, she found herself the target of a harassment online campaign. The incident did not deter her, but instead strengthened the determination of feminist media critic. Her notable contributions to the feminist field are recognized with numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for many years and was the creator of Feminist Frequency. This educational nonprofit explores women's representations in pop culture narratives.
